Senior Optical Design Engineer

Job description

The Senior Optical Design Engineer at PASQAL will be a core member of the Engineering and Production Department that is in charge of designing and manufacturing industrial Quantum Processors.

You will be responsible for implementing a complete optical model of a QPU (Quantum Processing Unit) in a reference optical design software such as Zemax Studio or CODE V.

The optical environment of the QPU is quite complex as it involves 11 lasers beams to perform the laser cooling and pumping functions, as well as the atomic transition excitations. The spatial trapping of atoms requires large numerical aperture optics. In addition the atoms state readout relies on high sensitivity imaging systems.

For all these optical functions and modules, thorough analyses of alignment tolerancing, beam quality, straylight, imaging quality… are required to ensure optimal performance. These analyses aim at supporting opto-mechanical design choices and tradeoffs, at evaluating optical performance, designing test set ups, and critically analyzing test results.

You will be directly responsible for several tasks along the V-cycle, including:

  • optical design of the QPU using specific software models,
  • optimization of the optical design: tolerancing, imaging quality, straylight, etc.,
  • prediction of optical performance,
  • propositions of optical designs for future generations of QPUs,
  • proposition and design of optical characterization benches and set ups,
  • provision of support to integration engineers,
  • rigorous documentation of numerical models and tests results.

You will also pursue an inventive activity in the scientific and technical fields related to the Company’s research, products, technologies and markets; and file or contribute towards filing patents as needed.

Qualification & experience

You own a MSc or and Engineering degree.

You have developed a strong background in optics, with a proven 3-5 year-experience in optical design. You are an expert of Zemax Studio/Code V, which you used to design imaging systems or laser beam forming optics – ideally both. 

You have some practical experience in optical instrumentation.

You have demonstrated your ability to quickly adapt to a new field of high complexity.

Skills

The successful candidate will demonstrate a keen interest in new technologies and be excited about the scientific challenges that PASQAL is facing.

He/she will have a strong ability to work autonomously, with limited direction.

Appetence for working in a multicultural environment and English professional proficiency are mandatory for this position.
